Chinese Medicine ~ First Impressions

Before I begin explaining my first experience with Chinese Medicine let me just say that I never, ever even wanted to think about doing anything medical related here. I am the one who prays that nothing serious happens between our trips to the US and diligently schedules all of our appointments when we are home there. However, when you live elsewhere things begin to change. Hubby has used a westernized healthcare system here quite a bit now and has been perfectly happy with the results.
I ask, as you read this, to be open minded.
Think of The Karate Kid.

During my first pregnancy FOURTEEN years ago I began to have trouble with my sciatic nerve on my right side. I have pretty much lived with it, except for around four years ago I went to a doctor to see if there was anything to be done. Basically, after an MRI, he told me to lose weight, exercise or have back surgery. I did find that exercising regularly seemed to keep things at bay, unless I was sitting for more than an hour. Fast forward to two weeks ago. I was exercising and felt something, on my left side lower back, not feel right. I began treating it as a pulled muscle because it did not feel like my pinched nerve on the right. After ten days it was not getting better and a massage actually made it worse.

I have this friend who lives here permanently. She is an amazing woman who I trust whole heartedly. She is completely fluent in Chinese and suggested I make an appointment with her Chinese medicine doctor. I am totally cool with acupuncture and the thought of having a pain free back was tempting. So I went last Wednesday.

It was a brisk fall day and the office was on the complete other side of Beijing in a district called Haidian. I took the subway, with three transfers, and made it there easily in a little over an hour. Thank goodness it was mid day and the subway was only packed instead of crammed. I was reading this amazing book so I didn't mind.

In order to go to a chinese doctor you must either speak chinese or have a friend who does. My great friend assured me she would be by her phone all afternoon to do my translating. I had emailed her all of my symptoms and questions in advance so she was prepared. I was told I would be met at the subway exit and taken to the office. Sure enough, a Chinese woman greeted my with broken English and told me we had a twelve minute walk to the office. My back was not in horrible pain, but I did feel pressure with each step. I will admit I was nervous, but I am nervous before any doctor appointment. I think I nervously giggled just to break the silence. She guided me, putting her hand on my elbow, as we maneuvered our way across busy streets. The area that the office is in is very nice and totally different from where we live. No Russian words in sight.
Suzhoujie Subway Stop Exit A
Only three transfers from mine
My appointment was at 2:00 but it quickly passed that time. Dr. Yao, who escorted me from the subway, told me that Dr. Hu was stuck in traffic on his way back from the University where he lectures at. I read my book some more. Another woman came in and we chatted. I soon found out that we go to the same church, although she is in the congregation we just split from and moved in after. Small world in Beijing!

At about 2:45 Dr. Hu came in. He is a cute chinese man that I felt comfortable with right away. He put on a white doctor coat and sat me down at a table. He rested my elbow onto the table with my hand in the air. He flicked the nail on the middle finger. He did this to both hands. He showed me the difference in how my hands reacted, very different indeed. My right hand remained limp and relaxed while my left hand curled up in response. Dr. Yao was taking notes as Dr. Hu spoke in Chinese. We then called my friend and she spoke a long time telling them what all of my issues were. We hung up and I was led to one of the beds, although I sat in a chair with Dr. Hu behind me. He started rubbing my scalp and neck area, similar to a massage. Do you know when, in a massage, they come across nodule like bumps that they work out? Well, he was finding those both on my head, on my neck and down my back. It was so interesting because on my left forearm he found three nodules, but on my right there were none. I started to think that these little bumps are definitely the result of something because they are not consistent on both sides of my body. He also found one on the front of my shoulder on the right side, but not on the left. I was intrigued.

We then went back to the table area to call my friend. He spoke to her for a long time and she listened. She then told me what he had to say. He says that two of my discs are so close together that they are pinching nerves. Both of my back issues are a result of this, and related to each other. He also said that I have neck issues also and would like me to get an MRI, which they will arrange with the hospital and take me to. He told my friend that he would like to see me twice a week for three weeks because he will be able to create space between those discs and it will solve my back problems. Okay!

We hung up the phone and headed to the same bed area with the chair. My friend had told me to wear sweats because he would be maneuvering me around oddly. I only had capri length yoga pants, which comes up later. While standing up, sitting down and laying down he did a series of treatments. All I can really say about it is that sometimes my legs were crunched up and he was always pressing into sections of my back. While he did that he would make a breathing sound and funny face and move those sections. I imagined it was similar to what a chiropractor does, although I have never been to one. I am sure that chiropractors don't make the sounds or face, as that is what made it Chinese...he was using his chi to fix my chi. It didn't hurt at all. As a matter of fact I was wondering if it would do anything at all. I was told to lay down for 20-30 minutes and rest.
The office was nice, but cold, with traditional chinese architecture
While I lay there I was cold. I knew I needed to dress warmer next time. But what long pants was I going to wear that were sweat like? These are the things going through my mind as the Chinese lady behind the curtain next to me was snoring so loud I was beginning to giggle. I was worried they would think it was me. I was also beginning to be concerned about the time. Since it was Wednesday the kids would be home early, like at 3:30. It was already past 4:00 and I still had quite a ways to travel home on the subway. I didn't know if they would come and get me or if I decided when enough rest was so I hopped off the table and peaked out of my curtain. I was scolded for only wearing socks. Dr. Yao is very protective of the patients and even though she is speaking Chinese I could tell when she was reprimanding me. I was not put off by this, as she was just being concerned. I quickly put on my shoes and proceeded to the desk. We called my friend one more time where we passed the phone back and forth multiple times.
My instructions are:
  • Dress warmer (I got in trouble for not wearing long pants)
  • My purse is way too heavy (she scolded me for this too)
  • Limit walking (there goes my plan to lose 10 lbs by Hawaii)
  • No exercise
  • Limit sitting, lay down as much as possible
  • No stomach sleeping for the rest of my life ( this is so hard for me, but apparently it is horrible for your lower back)
  • No massages for now, they are making it worse
I agreed to all of these and they told me I would probably be in pain for the next 24 hours. I wondered why. I made my next appointment, paid 330 RMB (about $50 USD) and was on my way back to the subway. It was a lot worse getting home as it was now crammed and there is always a lot of pushing and shoving to get in and out. I began to feel my back becoming sore and by the time I got home at 6:15 I could not even stand anymore. The pain was a dull aching, not sharp like a pinched nerve. I was glad they had prepared me for this.

Sleeping on my back just plain ticked me off. I love sleeping and I love sleeping on my stomach! It is how I relax, feel cozy and comfy...I told myself it would get easier every night. It really hasn't yet. But when I woke up the very next morning I had no pain in my back whatsoever, first time in thirteen days! It dawned on me the process of what was happening. His treatments were moving things to create space between my discs, hence the dull aching. With each time he does this it will, hopefully, become more permanent.

As I have done too much around the apartment, almost every single thing I do requires bending as all of our storage is knee height, I have started to feel pain again from the nerve. I also know that after my next treatment I will feel discomfort that night.

Overall there was nothing freaky that occurred during this first appointment. I didn't have to drink snake juice or eat herb leaves or even have hot fire cups on my back. It felt like they were actually interested in fixing the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms, which I am all for! It also is great that it is super cheap...my first impression is a pretty good one.

A picture worth a thousand words

What a wonderful world of technology we have!
On the day after Thanksgiving we were able to video Skype with my parents, nieces and brother. It is almost just like being there.

I love this picture because it is in my parent's kitchen. My family has always been "sitters around the kitchen table" meaning the meal is long and we linger after the food is over.

I love this picture because my dad looks so happy! You just don't get that kind of emotion over the phone.

I love this picture because it includes a niece from Michigan (snapping the shot), a niece from Long Beach, a brother from San Diego and parents from the Bay Area all talking to me in Beijing! At one point my brother had a friend from Long Island, NY on speaker and I was talking to him too.

I love this picture because they had just made homemade gnocchi with milanese (which is on my list of "must eats" when I go home in two weeks). I wish Skype had a taste feature. I will never take for granted my mom's ability to cook.

I love this picture because my parents are my two most favorite people in the world! I can't wait to spend a few days with just them, in my childhood home.

I love this picture because it allowed me to see a situation I was in from a different perspective, kind of surreal.

I just hope my niece was able to train my dad on Skype so we can have more opportunities like these.

Rations

Since we have been in Beijing we have noticed that some food items are just really expensive, or they just don't taste like home. So when hubby had a business trip back to the states last week he brought an extra suitcase.
He filled it!
chocolate chips
cake mixes
brownie mixes
Crystal Light and Propel
Instant Oatmeal
Sugar-free Jell-o
Sugar-free Pudding
See's candy
gel toothpaste (for 13 year old's retainer)
Fahrenheit oven thermometers

So, of course, we had to make brownies today after church! I forgot that we did not have measuring cups so I had to estimate on the oil and water. Then, I assumed the pictures on the oven wrong and ended up broiling our first batch!
Everything, even the little things, create a story!

My new favorite kitchen gadget! Lid Lifters

It started out of necessity.
You see I've always just picked up my can openers, used them and thrown them out and bought new ones. This happened far too frequently for my taste, partly due to the fact that someone puts them in the dishwasher all the time and they get rusty.

So I got a gift card for my birthday and I was determined to splurge on a can opener. My wishlist...no rust, easy to turn...that is about it. Well when it comes to can openers they are all metal so the rust factor was a huge issue...

Until I entered the world of LID LIFTERS!

Why a lid lifter? They do not cut your can, they unhinge the lid. This way there are no sharp edges AND guess what? It doesn't even get near the food so there is no washing needed...hence no rust!
Okay, another cool thing is that the way it removes the lid you can put the lid back on too. Bonus!
The one above that I bought is by Kuhn Rikon.
(you don't have to get a whale one).
Do not fret about the price though because I got mine here for $6.99! The same I would spend for "the can opener".
If you have the same can opener dilemma in your house, I strongly urge you to check out lid lifters!

I just wouldn't listen!

A few years back when we were in the market for a garage freezer friends told me, "don't get a chest style...it is too hard to see what you have!"
And I just wouldn't listen!!!
So after a couple of years of digging, guessing and more digging I came up with a plan!
Above the freezer, out in the garage, I hung a whiteboard. I did inventory. Whenever I move something to the inside freezer, or cook it, I erase it from the board.

Some items (like frozen pizza) I even put a count buy it, when we use it I can just change the number. It is magnetized so I hung a paper for a shopping list. I then got a little OCD and used different colors for different categories; breakfast is orange, purple is pasta and bread and snacks, blue is meat.

Happy Organizing!

Back To School- Doodle Bug

Can you hardly believe it is that time? Our kids went back to school this week.
Whoever came up with this line of school supplies is brilliant!(available at Target)

We bought the Book Covers but there are also notebooks, binders, etc. They are made by Gartner and were reasonably priced.

I LOVED to doodle, I still do, so I just may sneak my daughter's text books to color a bit. How will you spend your back to school hours without your kids?

Garden Kitchen Inspiration

What do you have on your kitchen countertops?
I inherited this amazing antique crock from my mother-in-law (on left) years ago. I've always kept my kitchen gadgets handy in it....until my everyday gadgets were so plentiful that it became a sore spot to me!
PROBLEM
SOLUTION
When I am in problem solving mode I want a solution and I want it NOW! (channeling my inner Veruca Salt) So when I decided I needed to seperate my cooking gadgets from my baking gadgets I was on the hunt for the perfect holder. Needing to fulfill my instant gratification and my lack of budget I opened my eyes and hunted around the house in search for something that would a)be the right dimensions and b) coordinate with the other things on my countertop.

FOUND

On my back patio, waiting for a use. I was attracted to this pot (found at Home Depot a couple years back) due to the color and the architectural detail. I picked it up with the desire to plant in it, but never did. Although whenever I passed by it, outside, it always reaffirmed to me that I loved those elements of it. That is why it became the PERFECT addition to my countertop!

MORAL

When you find something that speaks to you- and it is in your budget- BUY IT! Do not make the mistake of saying, "where will I put it, what will I use it for?" If you love it, you will find the perfect use for it!

Father's Day Gift Idea

We have already given our dad his Father's Day present. Since that is the case I get to share the gift idea with you just in time for you to pick one up for yours!
My husband has always loved making root beer and really enjoys drinking soda. So when I was at Williams-Sonoma and they were demo'ing this, I knew it would be perfect!
The Sodastream Penguin water cabonator is great! It comes with two Co2 containers that can be replaced at WS when you run out. It also comes with these two glass containers that have amazing caps to keep your carbonation in. It is so easy to use, you just use regular filtered water and pump it 2-3 times. Then you have sparkling water. I like to add crystal light to it...yum!

But since it is hubby's gift, I had to get him the Root Beer syrup. We also got Lemon Lime. Both are really, really good! In less than 2 minutes we have a fresh batch of whatever fizzy drink we like!

Italian Sodas anyone?

Laundry Day! Hooray!

When we moved into our new home our laundry room was plumbed for a sink but did not have one. Of course this was the FIRST thing we were going to do after we moved in...it's been SEVEN years!

I have the luxury of having a huge laundry room, but it has never functioned properly. I am the mom who folds all weeks worth of clean clothes in a three hour segment...NOT ANYMORE!

BEFORE- green walls, year old washer and dryer, had moved them from inside wall to window wall with the big plan in mind!

-AFTER-

We had been to Lowe's and Home Depot time and time again to begin this project. We actually picked up the stainless sink months ago when we saw one at a great deal.

Sweet hubby gave me a level in my Christmas stocking that said cabinets, countertops and sink would all be functional by December 31st! Great present!

Of course I could not sleep while and I decided we would head to to IKEA! It was a one stop shop for us and resonable too! The cabinets are made so well and easy to put together. It all fit in our van and best of all...THERE WAS NO FIGHTING AMONGST US!!!!

IKEA LIST:

  1. faucet- Edsvik

  2. countertops- Numerar in oak

  3. shelves- Grundtal

Along with the ample countertops for folding, these two things are a huge must and have changed my laundry system for good! It takes up space and doesn't look that great, but it is sooooo worth it. When I take a load out of the dryer I hang anything up. The clothes steamer (given to hubby by me for Christmas ;) heats up in seconds and I steam them as I hang them.

From start to finish it takes me less than 5 minutes to fold, hang and steam a load of laundry! I now do it everyday instead of once a week.

clothes steamer from Costco
Between the cabinets is a space for the Dustbuster and step stool.

This once was Jupiter's room. He still has his essentials (food, treats, toys and bed)
Along with my Roomba, the Wagner 905 steamer is my new best friend. It has a perfect storage place under my new sink!

Since it was the laundry room I knew I could have some fun with textures. These stainless steel racks are designed for the kitchen, but I will have so much fun accessorizing them!

Thanks for taking my little tour! Bring a load on over!

Kitchen Pantry Redo

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
One of my favorite blogs, Stephmodo, recently posted about kitchen pantry organization. With the new year upon us I couldn't help but get wrapped up in the organization of it!
Sadly I did not take a before picture. But I can tell you that the shelves were unlined and although it was once organized it, after many trips to Costco...well you know.
I first emptied the pantry completely and cleaned it all from top to bottom. Then I lined the shelves with leftover wallpaper from the garage. I sorted the items based on likeness. I ALSO GOT RID OF AS MUCH PACKAGING AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! I really have a passion for displaying everyday items in unique ways. So I went around the house and garage looking for items that are not being used efficiently and gathered them up. Above is a "stuff" basket that now holds popcorn and crackers.
Because of a laundry room redo (pics soon!) we had some premade laminate organizers laying in the garage. I thought one would make a great seperater. THINK OUT OF THE BOX, LITERALLY! Those little Jello boxes always bugged me, this made the ideal spot for them. I love it when that happens!
This is my favorite! This old metal bread pan has been used for hundreds of different things. Right now we have a surplus of Hot Chocolate. Perfect for the envelopes for these and oatmeal. Behind it is a grass basket filled with Easy Mac. If you think we don't have much cereal, I use large glass jars on my kitchen island for it.

I love having most of my baking supplies in airtight containers. No more hard as a rock brown sugar or ants invading my chocolate chips. Plus, take a peak at the mint green chocolate chips in the far right, so cute in a Mason jar!

The chalkboard door is not new, but the pictures of my kids inside the pantry are. They were literally just hanging out near the pantry and I thought, "Why not hang pictures in your pantry?" Oh, and do you like the gentle reminder to the kids? Usually I have dinner ideas listed (for me) and breakfast/snack ideas (for them) listed on the chalkboard.
THE RESULT:
Besides an awesome pantry- look at all the garbage that is not in my pantry now! Incredible! I really have a bone to pick with these companies about all the packaging they use!

Jupiter thinks so too!

Hope something here inspired you! If not, I'd love to come over to help!

A must for your Wish List!!!

Last Saturday we went to some friends house for a very expensive dinner party! It was expensive because they had something that I really, really wanted! I mean...really wanted! They had a Irobot Roomba! I had heard of them, but when I saw it in action....well....WOW!

Since I have been working lately, I knew I could benefit from it now. So we went here and used a coupon. Trust me, it is pricey but oh...so...worth it! Picture this:

  • your house getting vaccuumed as you do dishes.
  • your house getting vaccuumed while you are not even home!
  • your house getting vaccuumed while you are taking a NAP!!

The best thing about it is that it WORKS! I sweep my floor every single day. Yesterday morning before we bought it I vaccuumed and mopped my entire first floor. After we got our roomba we had it do it's thing. When we emptied the canister tons of particles came out!! It works on carpet and hard floors! And when it gets tired it finds it's home and goes right back! Amazing!

Every household NEEDS one!

My new workspace

I got a laptop! I have never had one before. It is awesome!

I used to have my workspace in the bonus room but the kiddos were constantly fighting me for the computer!
Here is where I will mostly post for y'all.

~here is the story behing this desk~

~using photo frames ~

One of the things that I did a while back was restock this picture frame. I loved having sepia architectural photos in it, but I needed some daily reminders of what makes me happy. This is what I came up with!

  • Kiss Mark more often!

  • Personally pray fervently daily & on my knees!

  • Do some exercise every single day!

  • Eat less junk!

  • Read my scriptures for my own joy & guidance!

  • Record my thoughts
  • Wear colorful lipstick everyday!

  • Spend less time in front of ANY screen!

  • Be forgiving of others & myself!

Each of these were thought of very specifically about how I spend time, what boosts my self esteem, and how I need to improve myself. I love the daily reminders and they have helped me be a happier, healthier person...and all because of a photo frame! I also have a cute frame next to my bathroom mirror that holds the saying, "When we love ourselves, we can love others".

Try using a photo frame for your own encouragement.

Well, it is time for a little trip. Won't we lucky to be here amongst all the controversy?

Reupholstery Project Part III- slow and steady

I began this project here. It has been fun and challenging and it has gone much, much slower than I thought! But when I was beginning to feel discouraged I came across this post by Melissa .
It was so inspiring and great comments by Layla.
That was all I needed to keep me trudging along. So I finished the upholstery part of ONE chair today.
This is without the "t" shaped box chair pad that I worked on for 6 hours last Saturday. Once I finished I put it on and it just looked not right. My next step is to go back and redo that.

Below is picture of what it looks like without a skirt. This is how hubby prefers it.

Here is a pic with the skirt (unhemmed and pinned on). I love how it looks!

Which do you prefer? With or without the skirt? Remember none of the pictures have the chair pad pictured, so it is a bit unproportioned.

Reupholstery Project Part II- Progress

You remember I started this project this week. So far this has been a fun, easy project. When I say easy I do not mean quick and thoughtless. It is taking much, much longer than I anticipated (don't they always?) and there is a lot of thinking that goes into it. Each part is a process but it really is just like wrapping a present.
My workspace currently. I woke this morning at 5AM to try to get some quiet work in before the rugrats woke up. You see, they are off of school right now and either they are "helping" or near me screaming, singing, arguing, etc. Ahhhh, the peace and quiet!
Two wings and the back pad done. Did you know staple guns give you blisters?

The welting has begun. I love the details that make it look professional.

Did you know that most of it is pulling fabric through openings in the frame?I decided to NOT do both chairs simultaneously so that I can look at the purple one as a guide. I am not sure that was the right decision or not. The thought is always looming in the back of my mind. "I am going to have to do this all over again!"

Today I am working on the box chair pad. More sewing machine today than staple gun.
♪On a completely different note ♪
Hubby is on his way home from Europe right now, YAY! And my niece is in labor! Today is a GOOD day!
